The spatial aspects of regulation and control, be it on the molecular level of a single cell or on the level of cells interacting in populations, is an intriguing and fundamental question in molecular systems biology, cancer biology and development. In a recent collaboration with Prof. Mark Chaplain and Dr. Mark Sturrock we developed the first spatial stochastic model, and in particular enabled its simulation, of the Hes1 gene regulatory network. The Hes1 GRN has been modeled extensively in the past, due to its implications to e.g. cancer and stem cell biology, and for the first time a model showed both nice qualitative and quantitative agreement with experimental data.
